HAPA - the music of Maui

"The most exciting and beautiful contemporary Hawaiian music the world knows!" (Maui Times)
Band website: www.hapa.com
The word hapa ("part") itself describes not only the blending of the backgrounds of the men who make up the group, but also defines the music that continues to attract so much success. Part traditional, part contemporary, part musical genius, part stunning vocals...these parts blend together to symbolize the cohesiveness of the music of HAPA. The evening features Barry Flanagan (lead guitar/vocals) and Nathan Aweau (lead vocals/bass) of HAPA; Hawaiian chant and storytelling by Charles Ka'upu; and hula dance by Malia Ann Kawailanamalie Petersen.
HAPA's self entitled debut CD, released in 1993, swept the 1994 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards (Hawaii's equivalent of the Grammy Award), becoming the biggest selling CD by a group or duo in the history of recorded Hawaiian music. Since their debut release, HAPA's groundbreaking music has established them internationally as the most recognized name in Hawaiian music, with sold-out shows from Tokyo to New York.
In November 2006, Barry Flanagan and Nathan Aweau released their new CD, It's a Slack Key World, as well as their first DVD, Hapa Maui. Narrated by Peter Fonda, the DVD features live performances from the award-winning Maui, plus outtakes, interviews, and three bonus tracks. It's a Slack Key World is Flanagan's and Aweau's first, self-produced CD, which features new original songs and tunes by Pat Simmons of the Doobie Brothers, Ernie Cruz Jr., Shawn Ishimoto,Imua Garza, Orama Brault, and Gaylord Holomalia.
In March 2005, HAPA released Maui. With its brilliant artistry, musicianship and creativity, the CD reaffirms HAPA's continued place among the giants of Hawaiian music. Maui is a collection of vocals and instrumentals that showcases the flawless singing and innovative and exciting bass playing of Nathan Aweau and the award-winning composition and virtuoso guitar styling of Barry Flanagan. In June, 2006 at the 29th annual Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, held in Honolulu, Oahu, Maui won four awards, including Album of the Year and Contemporary Hawaiian Album of the Year. In addition, Nathan Aweau was nominated for 10 awards, winning six, including Male Vocalist of the Year.
BARRY FLANAGAN, who founded HAPA in 1983, is one of Hawaii's most renowned guitarists and songwriters and has penned many of Hawaii's most cherished songs, including the award-winning "Lei Pikake" and "Ku'u Lei, Ku'uipo." HAPA's landmark debut album in 1993 (produced and written by Flanagan) was the first Hawaiian recording to reach gold certification with sales of more than 500,000 units. As producer, arranger and songwriter, Flanagan showed his creative genius on four follow-up HAPA albums. In 2001, after an 18-year association, Flanagan parted with Keli'I Kaneali'I, his partner in HAPA. In 2002, Flanagan released his first solo project, Instrumental Peace, hat was the biggest selling instrumental recording by a Hawaii artist in 2003. Instrumental Peace, a "treasure trove of beautiful instrumentals that showcase Flanagan's remarkable guitar playing," (Maui News) also unveiled a new direction for Flanagan, featuring two duet compositions with world fusion icon R. Carlos Nakai, the world's leading performer of the Native American flute. In 2003 R. Carlos Nakai and Barry Flanagan recorded 12 original compositions for Native American flute and guitar that featured poetic song titles in the Hawaiian language.
The Hawaiian born NATHAN KAWAI AWEAU's versatility and musical style have become his trademarks. In 1994 he released his first solo effort in the form of a single CD, containing three songs which he composed, sequenced, and co-produced. His second release in 1996 was a full length CD entitled, Center Stage, with nine originals. Then in 1998 Nathan's 3rd release, entitled One More Road, included eight originals and special arrangements on remakes of "Akaka Falls" and "If You Say My Eyes Are Beautiful." In 2002 Aweau released his third solo recording project E Apo Mai. In 2003, the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts awarded Nathan Aweau with two of its highest honors for his E Apo Mai CD release: Male Vocalist of the Year, and Song of the Year. In June 2003 Nathan joined forces with Charles Ka'upu and Barry Flanagan of the HAPA. In June 2007, Nathan Aweau was awarded Male Vocalist Of The Year Award for Hawai'i Classic Series Vol. II for a record third time at the 30th annual Na Hoku Hanohano Awards held at The Hawaii Convention Center. In June, 2006, Nathan Aweau was nominated for 10 Na Hoku Hanohano awards for HAPA's Maui CD, winning six, including Male Vocalist of the Year.
Master Hawaiian chanter, CHARLES KA'UPU, was born on Oahu and raised in the Palolo Valley, an area rich in Hawaiian music and art. A student, teacher, and performer of Hawaiian chant for 25 years, Charles is a Hawaiian historian, weaving fascinating stories into the show when introducing songs. His unforgettable chants on HAPA hits such as "E Hele Ana E, "Pride (In the Name of Love)" and "Aloha Namahana" leave audiences spellbound. He first became a part of HAPA in 1993 and continues to travel and perform with HAPA today.
MALIA ANN KAWAILANAMALIE PETERSEN has been dancing hula for 20 years, continuing to expand her visionary style. Born and raised in Kalama Valley, O'ahu, Malia started dancing hula at the age of five, under the direction of Kumu Hula (teacher), Kaulana Kasparovich, becoming Miss Keiki Hula 1988 at the age of eight. Over the years, Malia has enjoyed learning a variety of dance styles from different kumu. Now dancing for Hula Halau 'o Kamuela, under the direction of Kau'ionalani Kamana'o (formerly directed by the late Kumu Paleka Leina'ala Mattos), she is enjoying hula more than ever. Malia was honored with the title of Miss Aloha Hula in 2002. She has danced with many of Hawaii's top musicians, and has performed extensively, traveling regularly to Hawaii's outer islands, Japan and the United States.
